Along with Music Media, Mercy is one of two late 2019 Kiwi Animal arrivals that deserve some attention this side of the turn of the year. Kiwi Animal were Brent Hayward and Julie Cooper, the former of which you might know from his noisy work in Shoes This High who released that killer comeback record via Siltbreeze a few years back, and the duo were mainly active in the mid 80s when these albums were originally released. There's certainly a little shared spirit with fellow Antipodeans The Garbage and the Flowers, a definite nod to Roy Montgomery's Dadamah, and Kendra Smith fans will also find a lot to love. That's to say, this is post-Velvets in that distinctively 80s underground way - the reanimation of that smoke-fogged, darkhearted chic that was at once both jangly and dissonant. Kiwi Animal state their difference in how unafraid they are to be quiet. This is music that whispers its intent, makes you lean in a little closer so its easier to put the knife in your heart. So yeah, more essential business to line those heaving shelves. Only got a handful of copies on import so you know what to do.
