Now, how to describe this? And from where does it come? A brief search online tells me, perhaps falsely, that Iris contributed some remixes to the Swim label back in 1995, but only started releasing records in this past year. Of course, their identity remains a mystery, too. It's not clear if this is new music, or some odd 90s relic dredged up from the past. Whatever the origin story, the 90s does feel like a good place to start, specifically Bristol and the early emissions from Crescent and Third Eye Foundation, as well as some of those first releases on Too Pure that seemed to fit outside of everything else that was going on at the time. Speah is essentially a collection of guitar based miniatures, coloured in by some abstract electronics which display a fast and loose relationship with technology. This is resolutely odd and off-kilter, similar to how those first Woo records represented a kind of debased folk music, neither wholly human nor wholly machine. Addictive and mesmeric and not a little hallucinogenic.
