Om Shanti Om documents a Don Cherry-led quartet performance recorded for TV in 1976. It's not exactly Married At First Sight, but that's some higher level spiritual enlightenment being broadcast right into the home! I'm not saying we've culturally regressed, but imagine this lot showing up on Sunday Brunch and Tim Lovejoy droning on to them about Chelsea... As the title may suggest, this sees Cherry, joined by Moki, Gian Piero Pramaggiore & Nana Vasconcelos, in full on Organic Music Society devotional mode, Cherry's best kind of mode IMHO. The consertenering of Western, Eastern and Latin traditions is, to these ears at least, unparalleled in its conception and execution, Cherry's often mariachi style trumpet perfectly aligned to vocal incantations that transmit a deep spirituality as simply as breathing. Expansive and so natural in its sense of self, that Organic Music Society was some perfect union. None better, even.
