The year's begun a touch slowly in terms of new releases (that we care about), which affords me the opportunity to throw light on some hidden highlights from our recent history. The show-stopping Bons 7" issued by Fruits and Flowers last year drew me back to the band's debut from 2017, a fractured and collagistic gem from the artpop rhizome. Spilling from these multifarious mini-symphonies is a clear connection with the Another Green World of Eno, the DIY adventurism of both Flaming Tunes and Peter Jefferies At Swim 2 Birds project, and even the romantic heart of Sarah. Mostly, though, it's the spirit of something else we've been revisiting here a fair bit recently that shines brightest - the 90s Bristol of Movietone, Crescent, Third Eye Foundation et al. I think it's perhaps the folk underbelly that does it, wonky melodic sensibilities couched in campfire intimacy. This stuff's so wholesome i reckon you could grow plants out of it. Beautiful packaging as is standard with the Spillage Fete set. It’s been three years - sleep on this no longer
