Previously unreleased World of Echo-era Arthur Russell material recorded in 1985/86? Well, then! All other information is superfluous (aside from the very important biographical detail that the - very good btw - title track was written for a friend's pet rabbit: the man's inherent goodness was bordering on philanthropic). If the World of Echo LP means anything/everything to you, then these are of course essential recordings, less offcuts, more The Godfather Part 2. What we know from similar archival undertakings from the AR estate is that quality control is not really a concern. Process, practice and inspiration are inextricably intertwined, an ever-unfurling thread of creativity so unique but open-hearted it remains undeniable and undying. What i also find remarkable is that this music - and, i recently learned, there’s more besides that the wider world hasn't heard - is still being found on test pressings (two in this instance), on actual records that didn't quite make it to market, that maybe only existed for the benefit of their creator. There's a beauty as well as tragedy contained within that, of being so close yet so far, while also holding a romance and mystery in all these hidden and infinitely arcing possibilities. Still the best. MORE of the best. Someone should name a shop after the man's work.
