Another record arriving at the tail end of 2021 that got lost in the end of year shuffle is this debut outing from LA few-piece Semi-Trucks, tackling that same lo-fi 'fog pop' (TM Glenn Donaldson 2021) mystique channeled by their upstate fam in San Francisco. Based around the songwriting of Brendan Sepe, we're in prime lo-fi West Coast territory, a tape-hiss driven amalgam of Paisley Underground classicism (Mazzy and Opal in particular) and K Records DIY nous. Comparisons with April Magazine are inevitable, particularly on the slo-mo instrumentals, though Semi-Trucks songs are generally a little more compact, more akin to, say, The Pastels at their poptimist best than the dreamy-drift of Spacemen 3/Yo La Tengo that AM often channel. So yeah, here we go again off into the infinite West Coast underground. All this is sitting on California's doorstep and it's coming out on a Spanish imprint. I guess sometimes you gotta leave to come home.
