Military Genius - Deep Web

Surprisingly considered downtempo work from Military Genius, the one man project of Bryce Cloghesy, perhaps better known for playing with Crack Cloud & NOV3L. This is a very different speed to those parent bands, their energy and angular fury replaced with an afterhours melancholy that's no less politically charged. This is a subtle beast, skirting around the edges of jazz, ambient electronics and DIY exploration, the songs unfolding at considered pace, never rushing to reveal their charms. Deep Web displays a clear affinity with that new CS & Kreme record, sounding for all the world like it's beamed in from some other lonely planet. Going further back, you could draw some comparisons with For Carnation and the 90s Chicago scene (particuarly on final song, Born Blind, which particularly reminded me of the Sea and Cake). I'm not going to call it post-rock, but given the universe it's a part of, their vaugely political commentary and the fact it hails from Canada, it wouldn't be unfair to think there's a modern reanimation of the Constellation spirit/ethic emerging here. You heard it here first! Artwork is something else, too.
