OK, now we're talking. Gareth Williams (of This Heat) and Mary Currie's only album, recorded in 1985 and then reissued on vinyl in limited quanitty in 2012, is one of those pieces of music that seems to be added to with each passing day, edified by time and light to become bigger than what it originally was. The modest production, restrained instrumentation and, at times, almost child-like melodic sensibilties disguise evocative and unusual songwriting instincts. You can never quite get at these songs, they're off-centre in a way that's essentially unknowable but always compelling, always demanding you to return. I think they call it 'world-making'. To listen to this music is to be transported into Williams & Currie's universe. No surprise they were lifelong friends. The inate intimacy and shared intuitions are clear as day. This isn't a cheap record, but whatever you pay for it is a bargain. A true cornerstone and high watermark of 80s DIY artistry. Link in bio. This will not hang around long.
