The Horse is a six-piece group based between London and the Fens taking a deconstructed, open-form approach to the songs of its two principal songwriters, Luke Cowan and Owen Kennedy. Taking its cues from Wandelweiser via Drag City, The Horse has been described as a “slow-folk behemoth” (Crushing Death & Grief).
Favouring intimate DIY live shows in unusual spaces, The Horse has been steadily gathering a cohort of followers in London and beyond. The release of its self-titled debut album in November 2025 was marked by a sold-out release show.
The five songs on this album were written between autumn 2022 and winter 2023, and recorded live in a single three-hour session in August 2023. Overdubs including brass, piano, pinecone and wind chimes were then added over the ensuing six months. The album was mixed by Rhys Copeland.
