Black Editions journey into the seemingly limitless archives of Milford Graves uncovers this outrageous gem from 1976, recorded with Arthur Doyle and Hugh Glover just a few weeks before the same unit were to engage in the sessions that became the widely celebrated Babi LP. The energy is almost overwhelming, head-first into free expression with a rare velocity, steered and then lost and then re-centred again by Graves' unmoored, highly versed drumming. Honestly, i could happily indulge an isolated recording of the drums alone, though such a treat could not exist. Which is precisely the point: Graves leads from the back, but hears the room, too, both anchor and free-ranging guide in what plays as a breathless expression of power and invention in and with the service of others. They're all stars here, but it's Graves' vision, which is what Black Editions have assisting in intuiting here, that elevates the entire presentation. You can't just happen on music this free" learned, and then unlearned, and then instinctively felt. Which is what we now do as listeners all these years later. Powerful business!
