Laila Sakini - Into The Traffic, Under The Moonlight

The companion piece to last year's Vivienne from the Melbourne-born, London-based producer Laila Sakini makes its way to vinyl for the first time. Copies of Vivienne have become hard to locate, and i can see Into the Traffic... going the same way, such is the appeal of Sakini's rare compositional voice. I can understand why this is being billed as an addendum to Vivienne, certainly occupying similar sonic space, but this is a far less introverted set and it does do this record a disservice to consider it anything other than its own expression. Sakini's roots in the Australian underground are writ fairly large here, both dreamy and cavernous in her approach so as to recall elements of Carla dal Forno, YL Hooi, Kallista Kult et al, while she's certainly be at home of A Colourful Storm's i stumble and then i fall tape. Where Sakini differs most obviously is in her turn away from the dubwise influence central to much of that music, instead embracing various aspects of minimalism, modern composition, breakbeat, trip hop and chamber pop (the latter most reminiscent of Grouper's Ruins). It's a relatively unique melding of influences and inspirations, smokily arranged with a European art house elegance and Sakini's poetic voice, evident most obviously on the hypnotising closer 'Night Emotion'. Mostly i'm surprised this was made in London, reminding me so little of this city. Just maybe Sakini's here to change us lot for the better. Amen.
