TTT have been teasing the release of this Kitchen Cynics collection for some time now, which has afforded me a little (but nowhere near enough) time to familiarise myself with what is an overwhelmingly large catalogue of music. Honestly, this must be what discovering the Fall in 2021 feels like. As is seemingly the Trilogy Tapes way, there's little information accompanying the release, so i'm making the possibly false assumption that this is a compilation of various recordings from the deep library of music that spans the Kitchen Cynics history, one which dates back to the late 80s. Whatever, the 80s is a good place to start when trying to fathom all this. The project of Aberdeen's Alan Davidson, the Kitchen Cynics represent another manifestation of the vital DIY energy of that decade, not dissimilar to Modern Art, Cleaners from Venus, Patrik Fitzgerald, TVP, the brothers Jeffries et al, while the Scottish connection does draw lines to Male Nurse & Country Teasers. Davidson's music, though, is much less obviously provocative than his fellow countrymen, though no less transgressive. There's an intriguing breadth to the songwriting, another reason for me to believe this a career spanning comp, taking in Celtic folk tradition, sea shanties (not the TikTok kind), primitive electronics, bedroom psychedelia, and on the B side, elements of the moon phase post-industrial folk of Coil. Without even knowing, artists like Kitchen Cynics are the foundation on which a shop like ours is built and records like Beads Upon An Abacus might be considered its architecture. And I'm basically considering this a gift. Likely to sell out very quickly, as always.
