My 16 year old self would have loathed this. Any further endorsement required? Plantar is Japanese composer, Nozomu Sato, and a totally new name to me, but whose website suggests they may have spent some time in the capriciously unfashionable/fashionable world of commercial soundtracks and advertising. That history might have some bearing on the make-up of Forest, Sea, Harmony, a first physical release for Sato and one that reveals his overlapping interests in jazz, modern composition and progressive traditions. We're talking a sound broadly existent in the same space as sophisto-ECM, the airy grace of the Last Resort catalogue, and the less wacky offshoots of RecRec Euro-jazz-adjacent experimentation. Which is to say all things i could barely bend my head around as a blinkered teen but now seem both elegantly adult and alluring. How the ear adapts. Alas, the timbre of woodwind could calm any restless soul.
