Reissue of strange provenance of the 1987 EP by Michael Morley's somewhat mythologised Wreck Small Speakers On Expensive Stereos outfit. Originally released by Flying Nun, just before they started to sharpen their focus and much of the more unusual NZ output began to emerge via other means (Xpressway for one), River Falling Love is surely one of the more unusual releases for the label around this period, a minimalist lo-fi post-post-punk rendering with subtle psychedelic overtones. Immediately obvious why original copies are so sought after, and not simply because of the Dead C/FN associations. There's a Jefferies brothers sense of outsiderdom creeping through the four tracks, Morley's spoken-word vocals foreshadowing post-rock sensibilities while whirling keyboards and chugging guitars accumulate a psychoactive fog around him. If that sounds strung out and avant minded, it is, but also undeniably addictive too, replete with some unknown mystery that has you leaning in closer in an attempt to get a grasp on just what weird truths it is that Morley is murmuring here. Given this is most likely an unofficial bootleg, I'm not convinced we're ever meant to know. Which, let's be honest, is probably the best way to ensure your longevity. May the mystery continue to reign. crucial.
