Given the recent avalanche of reissues documenting Japanese music from the 70s and 80s, it's refreshing to be presented with a compilation that focuses on the present, even more so that Akuphone have concentrated their efforts on reflecting the work of seven female artists considered central to the contemporary electronic music of the country. Most likely to my discredit, these names are all new to me, and it's a sprawling, explorative set that suggests its Japanese origin in parts (namely Kunnatic's psychadelic mantra, 'Dewbow'), and at other points is looking far beyond their home country - Kiki Hitomi's 'Gain and Lose' has the dense, pyscho-gothic undertones of Fever Ray, while comp stand-out 'Fukagawa Bushi' by Mikado Koko would feel entirely at home in a Principe Disco set (which you might consider Midori Takada's incorporaton of African percussion as some kind of precedent for this. Or you might not). Japan's alright and all right, again.
