Soccer Committee, who both opens and closes proceedings, is perhaps the most recognisable name present, and aesthetically is a pretty solid anchor for understanding what’s being communicated here in terms of curation. Broadly speaking, you might qualify You Were So Close as ‘emo’, though it’s a very elastic understanding of the term, also incorporating lo-fi, folk, dreampop, ambient and shoegaze in a way that feels strongly communicative of the current moment. The Bandcamp era of emo (is that fifth or sixth wave at this point?) doesn’t really seem to have been discussed in too much detail anywhere of significance (correct me if i’m wrong), but it’s certainly been identified by Blush here, and most impressively with a range of artists not already well championed and represented elsewhere - always enjoyable to scan the tracklisting of new compilations and realise you’re unfamiliar with most of what’s featured. To that point, Blush have done some heavy lifting here.
