{"product_id":"troth-the-limits-of-a-light-touch","title":"Troth - The Limits of a Light Touch","description":"\u003cp\u003eOver the past six or seven years, Troth, the Australian duo of Cooper Bowman and Amelia Beeseny, have made a good number of records for a variety of esteemed labels, but on the occasion of their sixth (I estimate) long player they’ve taken the option of founding their own label to complete the task. This is hardly new territory for Bowman, a DIY maven who has spent a very long time in operation of the Altered State Tapes imprint, though I am intrigued by the decision making involved in going it alone. The accompanying press release states the importance of both their on-going NTS residency and the trauma of losing a family member in shaping the outcome of the record, though, all things being relative, it certainly seems to favour the light more than the dark. Perhaps this is the process of healing? Indeed, Limits of A Light Touch is arguably their most buoyant collection to date, transfiguring their now trademark combination of smoky trip hop, ethereal post-punk and dream-state ambience into wider vistas, Besseny’s vocal more upfront in the mix, the hooks that little sharper. Troth are by no means what you might consider a ‘pop’ act, and remain an introspective, subtle proposition who ostensibly favour smoke and mirrors rather than overt declarations, though they do shine with a different kind of confidence here, as if consciously attempting to reach beyond the underground that birthed them and face a broader audience. ‘Knotwork’, the track that sits at the end of the album, is probably the sharpest example of this, a shuffling after-hours invitation buoyed by an unexpectedly hopeful top-line that appears to reach out its hand to walk the listener into the morning of a new day.
