The infinite 80s stretches ever backwards! The Catburgers existence probably wont have registered to many beyond their closest affiliates, though theirs is a story as familiar to the post-punk DIY landscape of 1980s Britain as any success story that might be more widely recalled. Edinburgh-based and with a penchant for both Postcard and The Pastels, their on-the-money C86 sound was sharp enough to garner the attentions of Dan Treacy, who signed them up to record for his Dreamworld imprint, roping in Swell Maps' Jowe Head on one track for good measure. Some prime box ticking in evidence there, but alas... Shelved for some unspecified reason, the band split without a single official release to their name, destined for eternal obscurity. All that energy for nothing.. until now. Felt seem to have some familial connection to The Catburgers (i know someone who knows someone who knows The Catburgers quite well), affording them access to that fated session, now issued as a three-song 7", and a raft of demos, now present on a separate cassette-only release. The Dreamworld Sessions perfectly capture the times, gently-psychedelic janglers with a wallflower feyness that hits a sweetspot between TVPs, Cleaners From Venus and first iteration Creation DIY poptimism (ala The Times). As you might expect, the demos spotlight the vulnerability of nascent talent, characterised by an intimacy that recalls the confessionalist approach of Blueboy & the Field Mice. A charming time capsule no doubt, but this far removed from 1986, now feels almost classicist, a perfect encapsulation of a period, more so because they were unknown with it - nowt bigger indie credentials than that.
