What a find! Will the well of great Aussie pop ever run dry? Possibly, but if this is to be the final discovery then i'll not leave disappointed. Forming in 1980 when the members were all between 10-14, the absolutely perfectly named Tangled Shoelaces were barely adult before they called it a day, yet what they leave behind in these 22 recordings, most of which were previously unreleased, is as unabashed and as emotionally affecting indiepop music as you're likely to hear. Indiepop is a genre that lends itself to teenage concerns, though is often made by much older wallflower types battling with their own particular arressted development. In which case, Tangled Shoelaces represent some kind of holy grail. Comparisons with Television Personalties and early Creation luminaries like David Westlake are inevtiable, and by no means slight, but it also does this songwriting a slight disservice. The vocal is fragile and charming in that early indie DIY manner, but the music itself is blessed with a new wave pop nous that's actually astonishingly intuitive. How these kids got to this music is a question i'd rather not have answered. I'd prefer to imagine these pop savants, born of divine inspiration. It's more romantic that way, as the music itself demands.
