More Vanity Records related reissue business in the form of this Studio Mule compiled collection of Takayuki Shiraishi's work from the 90s. Shiraishi was a member of BGM, who's playful no-wave-isms were typical of Vanity's pioneering presentation of early electronic music. On his own, Shiraishi is much smoother, more club-led, but with the same experimental, inquisitive spirit. As such, there's obvious affinities with many of his western peers - there's Aphex in here of course, a lot of early Warp in fact, and there's also Detroit too, and since some of this music originally appeared on Apollo, this is just as much for the body as it is the head. There's nod a single dud here, and it flows together seamlessly, which is always a challenge for compilations and thus speaks of Shiraishi's defined sensibilities.
