Deluxe reissue of the debut album by your man from Cabaret Voltaire, which somehow i'd previously missed and as such have found it somewhat of a revelation. Here we find Mallinder displaced from Steel City and in downtown New York (likely by way of the Hacienda). Opener 'Cool Down' sets the scene, loose-limbed and infectious, riffing on that same primitive funk as ACR and ESG, upside down or sideways, never straight ahead. And because this is Cabs related, there's always going to be a sinister, mutant impulse pulling at its insides. Perhaps consider this as putting the 'Not' in Disco Not Disco. What I mostly love about this record, though, is how effortless and instinctive it feels, at play with ideas and possibility, seemingly unconcerned with the idea of making 'A Record'. So much of the best music from that era seems to be charged with that same spirit (like Flaming Tunes, in its way, i guess). Liberated creative impulse! Free the mind and the ass will follow, right?
