Stefan Christensen - Ruby

The latest from Stefan Christensen shows up on the lesser-seen double 7" configuration, an unusual vessel for SC's heavy-weather guitar exorcisms but nonetheless has a satisfying aesthetic weight to it. And Ruby is a particularly weighty communication from the Christensen world, a tribute to Carl Robert Talbot, a friend who was murdered by corrections officers inside the Whalley Avenue jail in New Haven in 2019. Everything else stands in the shadow of that thoroughly depressing reality, though the music conjured here is fittingly dense, desperate and tortured - on the first 7" storm cloud guitars swirl and spell doom just on the horizon, an almost entirely instrumental affair that makes use a lot of the classic Christensen six-string dynamics. The second disc is a little more restrained and considered, mostly folk-styled confessionals with a 4AM porch-side stateliness. That is until Luxury Is God crushes in to close things off, riding that mid 90s Crazy Horse/Sonic Youth axis until the wheels come off. Meaningful action as ever from SC and the Ever/Never stable. Sold out at source.
