shelter-orion-with-turner-williams-jr-krakatoa-2
Shelter & Orion With Turner Williams Jr. - Krakatoa 2

The French underground coalesces once again for Krakatoa 2, a second record of improvised strings ‘n’ things from the esteemed grouping of Shelter, Orion and American ex-pat, Turner Williams Jr. Their previous collaboration, what we now know to be Krakatoa number one, was a head rush brew of unusual ingredients, melding together a variety of unconventional instruments into a heady psychedelic miasma. This latest union isn’t exactly a change in direction, but it does feel more directed, or at least somewhat leaner, for the most part a psychic whirr of Williams Jr.’s impressionistic guitar playing and ghostly electronics that adopt a Nurse With Wound-like attitude to sound that privileges negative space and anti-formalism. These shapes are somewhat irregular, but they do nonetheless have purpose. The group cite Miles Davis and Jon Hassell as reference points, but the results feel even more unconventional and loose-limbed, like the Taj Mahal Travellers, Pan Sonic and Loren Connors presiding over some best not to talk about openly substance-based ritual. And if that doesn’t sound like something you want to hear, then I can no longer help you. Les Disques Omnison present another candidate for the NWW List reboot.

FFO: Organic Music Society, the Taj Mahal Travellers, Charlemagne Palestine, Smegma

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0051/1380/6921/files/Krakatoa2byShelter_OrionWithTurnerWilliamsJr..jpg?v=1793724107
