sergeant-symbols
Sergeant - Symbols

Second album of lysergic alt. pop from Belgian duo Sergeant, who have brought in label mate Milan W. to assist with mixing duties. This is discernibly more extroverted and hyperactive than most other releases in the Stroom stable, referencing the dayglo ooze of mid-period Animal Collective, the alien sleaze of Clinic and the Balearic-adjacent synthpop of early 00s Scandi imprint Sincerely Yours in supremely confident manner. There's a refreshingly maximalist approach to the entire endeavour, from the highly verbose track titles to the everything-and-the-kitchen-sink attitude to sonics, as multiple vocal overlays spiral around pounding drums at varying BPMs and clattering toyshop electronics. Hard to really place this in the context of anything else right now, feeling as it does beamed in from an earlier part of this century, though if you're a fan of the wonkadonk japes of Wah Wah Wino and feel that that wayward spirit might do the Conservatoire Pop of the current Copenhagen set a world of good, then you've probably found the album you were looking for this week. In these current times, that can't be seen as anything other than a victory.

FFO: Panda Bear, Animal Collective, Air France, Officer John, Clinic
