Ampersand Curve, his debut outing for Demdike Stare’s legendary DDS imprints, directs MJB away from the dancefloor and into more impressionistic environs, uniting open-ended ambient-jazz, Bernard Herrmann-like dramatic tension, post-industrial psychoactive gloom and murky dub abrasions. It’s a perfect fit for DDS (which, don’t forget, is an acronym for ‘distort decay sustain’), possessed of a similar haunted aesthetic as much of Sean Canty and Miles Whitaker’s pivotal early work, a kind of soundtrack to the ghosts of post-industrial Northern life. The ideas communicated here bear some comparison with fellow Mancuanians Space Afrika and Tom Boogizm’s Rat Heart project, all musicians that adopt and adapt widescreen emotional vistas in their evolution of post-club music. MJB has made plenty of stellar dancefloor-ready records, and has displayed his range via the collabs with Samizdat, but Ampersand Curve is a somewhat different, and arguably more compelling beast, slightly harder to parse but highly evocative in its mutant flux of a lesser explored terrain. Most crucial is that it’s also a record that shows Michael J Blood has a good few more gears to work through yet.
