Limited edition 'sun sugar' colour vinyl
Now then now then, we've been waiting a minute for this and now here it (nearly) is. Recorded in Calgary in 1982 with a 'crack team' of Canadian & Indian musicians, Rupa's one and only album was somewhat lost to time until some of that YouTube algorithm voodoo turned one of its four tracks - 'Aaj Shanibar' - into an online sensation. And rightly so, as that song is an absolute stone cold killer. Neither disco nor jazz, what we have is a fantastia of dreamy, synth-led groove oddness. And in Rupa we have one of those superstars that's as enjoyable to try to mimic as she is to listen to. Personality that could sing the phonebook into a hit. Allay that with a band who set their controls for the heart of the sun and don't look back, and you're left wondering just how this was lost in the first place. Alas, it's been near-impossible to find in physical form, and even if you were able to you'd need a house to re-mortgage to get your mits on it. Praise be to Numero for doing their usual diligent work and getting this reissue over the line.
Honestly, these are the reasons to open a record shop in the first place. Magic.
