Guitars Infernal is somewhat of an archival project, privately recorded in 2016 amidst what is described as a \"great deal of turbulence in Roy’s home life\" and released now to reflect what the artist sees as similar conditions currently existent in the wider world. The intensity to Montgomery's playing, a storm of phased and delayed guitar transgressions, is undoubtedly communicative of such troubles, and the overall sense of tension marks out Guitars Infernal as resultant of a different headspace to the more blissful qualities of much of his other recent work. Montgomery has been undeniably prolific the past few years - I count 14 albums in the past decade(!) -  and is in possession of a very specific idiom and aesthetic. It's to his immense credit that even within this unique oeuvre, there remains a constant refining and nuanced invention to his playing that means a work like \u003cem\u003eGuitars Infernal\u003c\/em\u003e can stand out as different: even without the biographical back story, it's clear all was not entirely well when these nine storm-cloud-forming, anxiety-laced six string agitations were conjured. Montgomery remains a singular of great expression - akin to a Loren Connors or a Kevin Shields - and this is the very sound of catharsis itself.
