Killer debut 7" of avant rock dreaminess from Philadelphia via New Haven's Rock Candy, the nothing-but-net winning duo of Kryssi Ballantine (also featured this week as part of Mountain Movers) and Emily Robb (great new solo album from her incoming next week). It's just a 7, but don't they make it work - two just-over-five minute guitar-synth-drum machine instrumental zoners that push the format to its limits. As players, these two have chops to spare, but the beauty lies in the tension they create in holding back, undulating guitar tone flickering to a climactic burst that doesn't quite arrive in that Infinite Horizon Rock style we cherish so dearly around here, caught somewhere between no-wave, the blues ecstatic of 75 Dollar Bill and the noise rock dynamics of the Dead C. Recorded back in 2023, I'm hopeful this is just the start of a bigger collaboration. Such style demands a bigger canvas. Until then, we'll take it in microcosm.
