The second release on The Hotel label sees the London-based label look to the recent past with a first time vinyl edition of the second album full length by Jordan Mallory-Skinner's Rocheman project. Originally self-released in 2022, Basin presents ten deeply personal, sometimes melodramatic torch songs built in the spirit of the Blue Nile, David Sylvain and Scott Walker, which address loss and birth with a genuine heart-on-sleeve directness. While the reference points are grandiose, and Mallory-Skinner's voice unashamedly earnest, the production is notably more lo-fi, recorded in a basement and making do with budget MIDI sounds that attempt to recreate the wider sonic vistas of its influences. The directness and sincerity are what make Basin appealing, an attempt to make something meaningful and emotionally rich despite compromised means and circumstances. These are qualities that, for whatever reason, are not really prevalent in underground music anymore, most communications now couched in irony or mystery or willful obfuscation. Credit, then, to Rocheman for taking the road less travelled and not turning away from the dark - on Basin, the only way out is through.
