"Andy Deepart and I go back to Plastic People, specifically the CDR night circa 2003 (I was their first intern & the junior crew member in that late Attica Blues posse who had the Friday at Plastics). I was still a teenager, Deepart in his 30s, dropping mad outsider Detroity Techno straight outta Cricklewood since the mid 90s, later becoming the first artist on Rush Hour records.
Five years ago 5/6 years ago, we reconnected at a Moses Boyd show in Camden. He was at Chelsea Art School in his late 40s; he’d found his lane as a painter / video artist. He asked me to do a small performance, no remit, which was the support I needed at that point.
So while he graduated from Chelsea, then from RCA, we continued to make college-based performances and more recently ahead of his group show Mixing It Up at the Hayward Gallery in 2021, he invited saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, dancer Kanika Carr, artist Serena Huang, and myself to respectively guest at his 1:1 Exchange residency at Beaconsfield Gallery, Vauxhall. This tape is the result of the two us of getting deep over 3 days... Our musical telepathy accompanied in the moment by the voices of Fred Moten, YouTube summaries of Derrida and Manthia Diawara preaching about Édouard Glissant on The Politics of Relation...
