True enough to an extent, though not exactly in the conventional sense. Travelling Light represents a fairly swift follow up to the career-redefining brilliance of 2024's Spectral Evolution, an almost hour long suite of abstracted guitar modulations and manipulations, both uncanny and psychedelic in feel. Despite their relatively close proximity, this latest collection appears born of a different approach. The guitar is still present, as are Toral's various self-made instruments and the characteristic distortion of bird song, but Toral has now turned his attention to more concrete forms, taking six jazz standards and interpolating them into more vaporous shapes, a kind of post-ECM ambi-jazz that plays heavy with the pathos. Some of these songs are nearly a century old, and as such carry within them a comforting warmth that didn't really feel present amidst the surreal vistas of Spectral Evolution. Fans of the Last Resort label will perhaps identify similar tones and textures, and you could make a fair comparison to The Caretaker's meditations on memory and identity, though Travelling Light is more transportative than it is elegiac and, well, sad! More so, this is undeniably thoughtful, skilled composition that renders the familiar a little less knowable, disrupting as it does our understanding of time and timelessness. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFFO: ECM, G.S.
