Puppet Wipes, the Calgary-situated duo of Arielle McCuaig and Kayla MacNeil, debut for Siltbreeze with this impressively titled long player of art damaged expulsions stained so markedly with DIY self-determination you could flog it in Homebase. Off-key clanking and drone, overlaid out of phase (and possibly tune) vocals and spidery guitar combine to create a whole lot of mess(thetics) and a whole lot more mystifying charm. They're certainly on the right label, though make gestures towards an entirely different space and time, notably the UK circa 79-81. We're talking the varying formations around the Homoesexuals ala L. Voag and Amos & Sara, some of the Cold Storage affiliates, and the tumble-down-the-stairs energy of Swell Maps. Lo-fi, absurdist, highly precocious and utterly unconcerned with what you might think you think you know. What's not to love? Released a month or so back but only arriving with us now thanks to the ever-maddening vagaries of international shipping, Puppet Wipes might be only the thing more unpredictable than UK customs charges and a great deal more welcome. 30 years in the game and Siltbreeze still right at it.
