Repress of the record that really started the hype fizzing for Natal Zaks Picture project way back in the distant times of… February of this year. Zaks has since released a second LP under the same name, and that, like the first pressing of Eeeeeeee, flew out the door quicker than you can say “mate, have you any Chain Reaction in, mate?”. Needless to say, the fella - like Short Span as a whole - is really tapping into something here, namely that seemingly ever-blossoming recurring interest in late 90s dub techno. Put it this way, if this were made with guitars, it would be ‘shoegaze’, and while that means Zaks finds himself in a busy lane, he’s standing out because the productions are simply just a lot better than most, displaying a sharpened balance of minimalism, dub texture and hypnotic propulsion that could be classic just as it could be a part of tomorrow. There’s also something quite heady about a few of these tracks that’s uniquely immersive, the panning in the stereofield woozy and disorienting, lost in the maladjusted fog of the club. It invites repeated experiences. Hyped? Yes. Deserving? Also yes. Small mercies perhaps, but this being back in print the same week as the new Loidis album sells out on pre-order.
