Following their reissue of Cuando El Tiempo Sopla in 2019, Enfant Terrible offshoot Vrystaete once again turn their attention to the Ô Paradis back catalogue with a first-time vinyl pressing of the Nový Svět collab from 2003. Admittedly, we are in fairly obscure territory here, i forgive you for not understanding much of that first sentence. Any blindspot should not remain. I'll do my best to shed some light... Both Ô Paradis and Nový Svět hold some kind of place within the obscured European underground of post-industrial music, each with a body of work that dates back a few decades and spans all sorts of micro-scenes. I wont pretend to be au fait with the entirety of their respective output, but their combining of forces does seem to elicit an uneasy magic. We've spoken before of the 'Haunted Plaça' feel to Ô Paradis' music, which remains present and correct in the ghostly Waitsian vocals and droning ambience, but Nový Svět's presence seems to dial things up a notch, neo-folk trad melodicism mutated through an industrial lens, draped in sparse electronics and metallic percussions. Current 93 and Moon Phase period Coil remain obvious touchstones - they seem to share the same midnight concerns, appear gravitated towards the dark - while it's no surprise the label has also issued Brunnen and Brannten Schnurre records, acts who also lean into a dark European past to push into its future. Folk is an oral tradition. Here it comes from the mouths of its ghosts. We've only got two of these for some reason. I'd recommend not being disappointed.
