And while I was personally that way inclined, National Park, an on-off group of (third album) Velvets acolytes who have been together since 1997, had passed me by until very recently. Erols Hot Wax have done a service for those like me by putting together this nine song collection of singles, EPs and unreleased recordings made between their initial formation and the present day. The band will have initially existed adjacent to a burgeoning Chemikal Underground and a wider context of post-rock, and these songs will have made great sense alongside the likes of Mogwai, Arab Strap, Aerogramme and the Delgados, a combination of slowcore dynamics, the ecstatic release of Galaxie 500 and that ‘music for imaginary films’ aesthetic that was so influential at the time. Put a photo taken from the window of a moving car on the front, tie a ribbon around it and you’ve the perfect time capsule of an era. I’d also venture that National Park’s influence spread wider than their home town, kissed with the kind of Neil Young-derived dreamy\/cosmic country grammar that has since made posthumous stars of the likes of Acetone and Duster, and with it further evidence of that famed US-Scotland spiritual connection. And not simply another exercise in nostalgia-core, we’ve also the inclusion of recent material and the distant threat, I read, of potential live performances.
