More uncanny Fourth World brilliance from Spencer Clark under his Monopoly Child Star Searchers moniker, returning to Discrepant following the vital reissue of Prince of Parrot Shooters/The Aqueducts of Channel Island we were eulogising about a year or so back. We mostly know Clark's work as part of Skaters to be gnarly and a little fucked, but Monopoly Child Star Searchers is notable for just how escapist, uptotic and fantastical it feels by contrast, an imagining of a paradise world, perhaps lost, perhaps fantasy, or maybe even simply a refracted view of Clark's own experiences living in the beauteous environs of the Canary Islands where this was recorded. In the hands of others this could be a little too saccharine, but Clark's an adept hand at weirding-out, certainly displaying a Hassell inspired exoticism that entrances just as it unsettles, highly layered, disorientating but strangely comforting too in that post-structural shifting of signs kinda manner. You know it, but how? The origin eludes. Not such desert of the real as shangri-la of the unreal, i'd suppose.
