cassette - mixtape
WOE regulars will remember the mix Moin submitted for our Inner World series earlier in the year, or perhaps even the set they played at our third birthday at OTO in October. You might even recall both. Well here they go one better, on all counts, with this C90 mixtape which windmills freestyle through the hardcore DIY outsider underground undergrowth. There's a few sounds you'll be familiar with straight off (No Trend, The Gordons, Able Noise++), others that'll have you on the Shazam to frustrating ill-effect. As it should be. What's best about this collection is what it says of Moin's inspirations and interests - their debut album, Moot!, was clearly hardcore indebted, but tied to a techno precision/production that shifted it into a space all its own. Here they express a looseness not necessairly obvious on that record, a more freewheeling, scattershot oddness and fury that has little, if anything, to do with the electronic world. It's a load of songs by other people, yeah, but it's a load of songs no-ones put together like this before, and i'll always be drawn to the way a compilation/mix can expand the world of its creator. Most crucially, there's not a single skippable moment (which is just as well as it's not very easy with tapes). Edition of 50.
