Michael Yonkers, cult 60s psych-folk outsider, is plenty obscure as is, but Microminiature Love turned it up a notch or two further. Originally recorded in 1968 but left dormant until its discovery and eventual release by De Stijl in 2002, these 13 tracks served as a mythology enhancing sensation of fried-but-still-alive mutant rock ‘n’ roll that must have sounded positively unhinged on initial conception, and in the context of the renewed interest in garage rock of the early 21st Century (De Stilj was of course also home to a young White Stripes!) would have been undeniable manna from heaven (or is that hell?). Sub Pop were obviously listening and issued it first as a CD and then on vinyl again in 2011. 15 years later, it’s finally back in print again and the shock and awe remains. It’s year of origin puts it well ahead of most of the rest of the field, but it’s nonetheless clear that here Yonkers was accessing a lineage which connects a very particular kind of bent out of shape, art-damaged rock ‘n’ roller, one that runs through Roky Eriksson, Dead Moon, Pere Ubu (almost astonishingly so), The Gories, Jim Shepard, Royal Trux and on and on eternally (we should be so lucky). Why was this shelved at the time? Sire must have been a callow lot back then. Truly as good as music of this kind can get and better still as it’s fresh from the source, still feeling a touch lost and out of sync and unquestionably crucial. Yonkers sadly passed away in the first half of this year and they don’t tend to make them much like that anymore. At least Microminiature Love feels not only reborn but that it might shine on forever.
