Two pieces of essential printed matter in from Discreet. The first is issue number three of their in-house zine, throwing light on four more of the key figures in the increasingly vital constellation of artists involved with the label and shop. No-one else is really writing about these acts, certainly not in print form, making this a perfect example of DIY ethos in action. Build what you want to see in the world, and then provide the reportage to make it understandable (if understanding is indeed what you want). Saw it said somewhere online recently that Discreet were the Xpressway of their era. Don't bet against it. The second publication is a follow up of sorts to the great Speaker Crackle in the Garden magazine from a few years back which documented 100-odd lathe cuts from the NZ underground. On The Unearthed Puzzle, writer Martin Nilsson turns his attentions to the near-infinite sonic universe of James Ferraro and Spencer Clark, documenting 47 'artefacts' (records, tapes, prints and such like) the pair have been involved with over the years. This is an endlessly inspiring rabbithole of outsider art and diffuse musical expressions, much of it detailing work i think most would otherwise not know exists. This shouldn't only be of interest to Skaters heads. This is cultural archaeology, giving discourse and, yep that word again, understanding to marginal creativity and pioneering work. A culture without criticism is doomed to fail. Consider this oxygen and consider it needed.
