Recorded at Dub Narcotic, the studio connected to K Records Calvin Johnson, with a large cast of musicians including members of Deerhoof and The Curtains amongst others, Faux Départ offers a compelling document of shared wayward spirit and inverted thinking. Kudo has made enough music now for it to be recognisable, but understanding it is a different endeavour altogether. Free is perhaps the best way I can describe, a loose configuration of psychedelic jazz pop exclamations that move in prismatic formation - light through an object, moving in different directions. The many songs that make up Faux Départ are invariably colourful, wild, oddly melodic and wholly unpredictable, an open invitation to look at what the light did now. Squawking horns, loping guitars, tumbling percussion, and a sense of ‘what if…’. Kudo is very much on his own plain, here or anywhere else, though the union with Deerhoof makes a great deal of sense, while there’s certainly a kinship with the freeform, whatever-sticks vivid neo-psychedelia of primo Elephant 6 at play also. Everyone here gives it a damn good go, committed to the view that light bends most when it hits at a different angle. Faux Départ is the consequence of such intentional, joyful refraction.

FFO: Deerhoof, Tenniscoats, Elephant 6

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0051/1380/6921/files/MaherShalalHashBaz-FauxDepart_745f697b-b8c1-456b-bd26-5976ae63874d.jpg?v=1792682475
