I've given up trying to work out the hows and whys of such things, though bloweyelashwish certainly makes it clear that they're fully deserving of the renewed interest. The codification of shoegaze aesthetics generally divides into two camps - the cavernous guitar-driven classic rock band set up favoured by Ride, Slowdive, Lush and the like, and more experimentally minded groups utiltising delay, decay and ethereality to expand the applications of guitar music like My Bloody Valentine or Cocteau Twins, but also, arguably, Seefeel, AR Kane and Flying Saucer Attack. It's to the latter constellation of groups loveliecrushing more obviously belong, Cortez summoning endless rolling waves of horizonless sound from his reverb drenched 12 string while Arpin-Duimstra hides under the swell with her gentle, sensual glossalalia. There is no doubt this is shoegaze, though it's also close in tone and texture to certain groups we might consider ambient or post-rock: early Stars of the Lid perhaps, certainly Disco Inferno, and it would not have sounded entirely out of place on the Isolationism compilation from 1994 even if they are mostly a good deal more soft-focus. This is also notably sensitive and nominally feminine sounding music in ways that perhaps weren't as widely popularised during the bluster and bravado of the early 90s. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable arguing we're a more open or sensitive people now, but there's something in these songs that seems to be connecting anew and, somewhat unusually, doesn't feel in any way dated at all (even the name sounds like it could belong to a new West Mineral/3XL splinter group). If by association that means a victory for the sensitive and the feminine, then it was worth waiting for.

FFO: Bowery Electric, Grouper, My Bloody Valentine, Vacant Gardens, Flying Saucer Attack
