What is it with labels at the moment, putting out multiple great records all at the same time? First Ultra Eczema, now Horn of Plenty...Worse things have happened i suppose. Regardless, i must say straight off the bat, this thing needs to be SEEN to be believed. Much like the first Little Skull 7" on HoP, Lower Hope Reach comes housed in an astonishingly intricate hand crafted sleeve, with a few different sleeves and beautiful prints. A thing of wonder in and of itself, and crucially the attention to both detail and beauty is duly reflected in the music. Here, Little Skull make the kind of atmosphere rich, sonorous instrumental music you might have once understood as post rock, by which i mean Dirty Three, the For Carnation, Stanley Kubrick era Mogwai... Beautiful, dramatic miniatures that do that 'soundtrack for an imaginary film (or White Ribbon)' thing very adroitly, which makes the tonal shift in the final track to a more free-form style of noise/drone even more affecting. Little Skull; Big, Dark Heart. There's a lot going on here below the water. The clue was in the artwork...Edition of 200 on black vinyl.
