Last Light marks their debut with the release of the enthralling “A Serrated Sky.” The duo is made up of Dean Brown, who many know under his solo moniker Little Skull, as well as from his work in Nova Scotia and Negative Eh, and Ben Spiers, who has made solo and collaborative experimental recordings since the late 90s, and notably worked with C/Site alums Antony Milton and Kawaguchi Masami, as well as Aotearoa New Zealand stalwarts like Campbell Kneale, 1/3 Octave Band, and many others. The path to collaboration has been a long one for these two. They are Aotearoa New Zealand natives, and have knowingly and unknowingly crossed paths time-and-time again since the late 90s, with both living in England since 2008. However it was not until 2023 that the idea of playing together came about. Initially Last Light was a chance for the two to play some drums and guitar properly amplified, it quickly took shape as a dynamic and evocative project all its own. Unsurprisingly the sounds harken back to their Aotearoa New Zealand experimental roots, finding inspiration from an array of the islands’ finest players. Last Light may bring to mind the out-there sounds of Sandoz Lab Technicians, Doramaar, and the finest elements of the esteemed Metonymic label. Deep drones, wailing guitars, ecstatic freakouts, and otherworldly psychedelia all find their place within the duo's expansive and vital sound.
