Another one that we've been waiting on for a while has finally shown its face, which typically provides us with two Headroom-related releases in the same week (and i think four Stefan Christensen bits in two weeks?)... No complaints here since Headroom's New Heaven record Ever/Never last year is one of my favourites of recent times, and their pairing with Landing on this split 12" is an ideal marriage. Landing, in operation for over 20 years now, have made a minor habit of shared releases (Windy & Carl, Fuxa, Rothko++), and their Kranky-adjacent post-shoegaze psychedelia makes a neat counterpoint to Headroom's more ecstatic Velvets-referencing guitar fog. Landing's two contributions flit between Bowery Electric style-midnight elegy and Spacemen 3 tripped out rock and roll nirvana. Two winners on their own, but the Headroom contributions raise the bar a good way further. Kyrssi Battalene is a star performer, her guitar playing both grandiose and subtle, like say Roy Montgomery, but allied with a style of songwriting straight out of the Paisley Underground (like the best of the Roback/Smith partnership). You'll be doing well to find these Headroom tracks anywhere but on this record, so you'll have to take my word for it (or come in the shop), but this is gold standard material. Best band in American right now? Well don't bet against it.
