Highly limited first time vinyl pressing/physical release for STAR IN THE HOOD, Klein's sprawling, convention-baiting dismantling of ambient aesthetics. Like with everything the south London producer has done since first emerging midway through the last decade, these 55 minutes ring loudly with an iconoclastic force, defiantly singing to anything but the chorus. As such, Klein contrives a storm of genre-defying electronics, lacing together elements of noise, fractured gospel and R&B, hiccuping vocal samples, mutant ambience that flits between drone and cinematic poise, and a singular personality that's all her own. It's a spirit she shares with her more celebrated contemporaries, Mica Levi, Hype Williams, Space Afrika et al, and every bit their equal
in regards to vision and invention. So much to dig into here, be it the ten-minute long slow-phased trance of 'schooled', the lo-fi piano stabs of 'a break from angel' or the Yellow Swans-under-digital-water guitar wail of 'brand new day'. Taken as a whole it blends a compelling portrait of a restless mind, unmoored from expectation and fearlessly venturing wherever it cares. After all, stars in the hood don't stand still in the night sky.
