Kali Malone was truly on form with last year's Magnetism LP with Drew McDowell, and keeps that strong run of collaboration going with this latest work with cellist, Leila Bordreuil. Recorded at night in Switzerland at the typically lofty Temple of La Tour-de-Peilz (is Malone's music now ever performed anywhere understated?!), the is a work of great restraint and heaviness, the acoustic intersection of organ and cello amidst high ceilings and wide arches generating something both physical and austere. These are the kind of timbres and resonances you feel within your chest, the air moves, and you too with it, the kind of performance that makes you aware of your own body and that sound is an equally physical and cerebral thing. Of course, the environment plays a big factor in such things, and there's even the subtle interruption of various ambient sounds to remind you that this is the document of people within place at a certain time. If that all seems so very serious, know also that they end the four-part record with a (what can only be deemed purposefully) short 1:30 long piece entitled (wait for it), 'Endless Dance of Eternal Joy'. There's no dancing to be had, and not a conventional understanding of joy, but a wry smile says more than enough.
