The first of two Jon Collin records this week, both of which are essential for different reasons. Music From Cassettes, issued by the Forlag For Fri Musik crew as part of their archival series, collects together a range of recordings taken from the huge reservoir of material Collin has amassed over the last eleven years, mostly while located in Sweden. While Collin is as virtuouso as he is prolific, his guitar playing, loosely in that same school of expression as Jack Rose, Loren Connors, John Fahey, is crucially as emotive as he is skilled, adaptable acorss both acoustic and electric forms. Though the American Primitive sound is an obvious touchstone, there's also a reason this has ended up in the hands of Fördämning Arkiv - there's something kind of instinctive about Collin that feels less tied to canon, a DIY fluidity that allows for unexpected shifts in tone and texture. Let's say there's a little iconoclasm in mind as his guitar gently weeps...And it often weeps with that lonely prairie sound. The true value here is that those who favour noise and abstraction are just as likely to be as satisfied as those who came here looking for moonlit porch reveries. Along with the Demdike collabs (see below), this might just be a big turn towards the light for Collin. A NEW MASTER EMERGES! Edition of 300
