Paris-based musician Jeanne Gorisse debuts for Les Disques Omnison with a long form selection of electro-acoustic improvisations derived from the intersection of both the double bass and bowed electric bass. Given this is released by Tom Val's label, you can expect a rough-around-the-edge quality of these recordings that belies Gorisse's classical training - there's an obvious intention to move away from the institutional to something a little looser, free-form, and, well, overtly experimental. There's an intriguing dialogic element to the positioning of sound here, with the re-recording and layering of Gorisse's playing in very subtle ways, creating a sense of intimate minimalism, the listener made privy to a private process of creating and expressing. The DIY element of the Les Disques Omnison scene is likely a guiding inspiration to Gorisse's approach, though you can certainly hear trace elements of the greats in here too - Ellen Fullman, Elaine Radigue, Phil Niblock, Pauline Oliveros et al - which positioned Moires in a compelling position between the traditional avant garde and an emergent new underground.
