Japanese Telecom - Virtual Geisha
First time reissue of Lord God Gerald Donald's cult Japanese Telecom album from 2001. We all know Donald for his Drexciya and Dopplereffekt output, though he's a man of a million aliases and Virtual Geisha is as kissed with inspiration as anything else he's put a name to and claimed as his own. Conceptually, Japanese Telecom is a continuation of Donald's Heinrich Muller pseudonym, a namesake devoted to exploring his characteristically Detroit electro sound in the context of Japanese culture (there's some obvious Y.M.O referencing synth arpeggios bouncing off the walls in here - see Pagoda of Sin). At the time it was probably presented/understood as a pastiche of sorts (one lovingly embraced by electro-clash a year or two later no less), but now it just sounds like a personality-driven evolution of the 'machine funk' Donald, Stinson et al had been turning out and up in their home town for years. And that Enter Mrs Suzuki track shows yet again how far the shadow of Throbbing Gristle was cast... Genius stuff.
