hinako-omori-studies-on-a-river
Hinako Omori - Studies On A River

Serpentine-commissioned, collaborative ambient study between Japanese producer/composer, Hinako Omori and Maori poet & writer, Hana Pera Aoake, which unites kankyo ongaku sonics with a spoken-word meditation on environment and tradition within indigenous Polynesian cultures. It's divided in two, the first side just Omori's composition, the other featuring Aoake's narration, and it's in that second half where the concept properly clicks. The medium, so to speak, and the message are so obviously well-aligned as to be literal, where water sounds are presented alongside Aoake's understandings of the value and vitality of rivers, a framing of ambient sound against ambient experience. The result is thoughtful, serene and gently profound, very much within the great Japanese tradition of such things (think of Yoshimura's Surround in particular), whilst also making nods to certain iterations of Berlin School composition and new age dreamstate electronics. More so, I was also reminded of Robert Redford's (yes, the very one you're thinking of) The Language and Music of the Wolves, a supremely compelling treatise on the obscure strategies of wildlife, a lesson in living alongside rather than above. Omori and Aoake tap into that same understanding.

FFO: Hiroshi Yoshimura, Perila, Lord of the Isles, Iasos, The Language and Music of the Wolves
